I shot the Maccabees here for DIY. It’s a great little studio in a railway arch!

Also in the new issue of DIY, Mercury nominee Ghostpoet cooks us up a storm.
(Note: he doesn’t actually cook his dog, no matter what the above photo montage might suggest.)
For this shoot we went to Ghostpoets house and he cooked us an incredibly tasty dinner! Really nice guy too!

Ryan Adams is on the verge of releasing his latest solo album. We have a chat with him in the new issue of DIY - available next week.

We’re just back from a ‘pretty important’ photoshoot for our next issue. As you can see here, The Maccabees are being snapped by master snapper, Sam Bond.

Remi Miles Promo Shoot
Seeing as I’ve had this blog for ages and never really done anything with it, I thought I would do a write up of my latest shoot with musician Remi Miles! (http://www.myspace.com/remimiles)

I’ve known Remi for a few years and we did a shoot early 2009, but a new year called for new photos. As we shot in a studio last time on a white background, I thought it would be good to have a different look to this shoot. I found a great outdoors location in Brighton, but on the day of the shoot the weather wasn’t great so we decided at the last minute to shoot inside. Fortunately I have just moved into a great office and hadn’t shot there before so we decided to use it for our location.

Remi is great to photograph. He takes direction well, looks great infront of the camera and loves having his picture taken! I think we shot for about 2 hours and did 5 setups in total.

So I guess you’re wandering about the lighting and all the technical stuff right? Well I usually use at least 3 lights (softbox for key and 2 bare bulb for rim/backlight), but after studying different lighting styles and wanting to try something different, I decided to simplify things a bit and use a single Bowens Gemini 750 with a 12” reflector.

The effect that the reflector has isto make it very contrasty, with harsh shadows and more directional than say a 48” octabox, which throws light everywhere! I tried to keep the light as close to Remi as possible and because of this, it had to be on its lowest power setting as it’s very bright! If I remember correctly, the camera was set to ISO200 and I was metering at around f/13 - f/16. I love the way the pictures have turned out, and think I will be using the reflector alot more in my future shoots!

I shot RAW using a Nikon D300 with a 35mm f1.8 lens. I loaded the photos onto my mac and used Lightroom for organising and colour adjustments, then exported my selections to Photoshop. There is actually very little retouching in the final images. All I really did was clean up the backgrounds a bit and do some very minimal dodging and burning.
Before/after:

I wish I got some set up photos from the shoot, but I wasn’t initially going to do a write up. I will make sure I get some on my next shoot, and also maybe even a behind the scenes video!
I hope you enjoyed reading this and maybe even learned something. It would be great to hear your thoughts, suggestions and constructive criticisms!
